In a move that underscores the Greater Philadelphia region’s increasing attractiveness to the manufacturing industry, Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable transportation technology, has announced the opening of a new project office in Philadelphia. 

Their project office, focusing on design and engineering jobs, supports Alstom’s existing manufacturing operations in Pennsylvania and highlights the deepening of its supply chain in the region. 

Alstom’s Philadelphia project office was supported by The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia (the Chamber) and additional regional key economic development partner organizations.   

A global company, with a presence in over 60 countries and a talent base of over 85,000 people, Alstom’s decision to set up shop in Greater Philadelphia highlights the company’s interest in continuing to do and grow its business in the region. 

Alstom’s Projects and Partnerships Rolling Along in Greater Philadelphia

Currently, more than 650 Alstom employees are engaged in various project sites across the region. The company’s Center City Philadelphia office will initially accommodate 15 employees, with plans for future expansion, according to an Alstom representative.

In June 2023, Alstom signed a contract with SEPTA to build and supply 130 energy-efficient electric light rail vehicles, valued at approximately $718.2 million. Phase one aims to deliver the initial 130 vehicles, with a potential phase two option for an additional 30 vehicles.

Region’s Assets Aid Manufacturing Growth

Once crowned the “Workshop of the World,” the Greater Philadelphia region’s advanced manufacturing industry remains a powerhouse.

This status is driven by its central location on the East Coast, which facilitates a world-class transportation network and reliable infrastructure. These include a globally connected international airport, a dense network of interstate highways, a robust regional rail system, and access to several key ports, which support the seamless shipping of materials, products, and goods.

The region is also home to a myriad of other key assets, including access to a highly skilled workforce, world-class research institutions, and a supportive and globally leading business ecosystem. 

In the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the manufacturing industry contributes to more than 10 percent of Pennsylvania jobs, with over 566,800 residents employed in manufacturing. 

Southland Industries: Case Study for Manufacturing Sector Success in Region

Southland Industries, a nationally leading MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) engineering and construction firm, has strategically grown its footprint in the Greater Philadelphia area in recent years, most notably through the 2020 acquisition, and subsequent brand consolidation, with Burns Mechanical, a well-established mechanical contractor with regional roots.

Alstom’s Expansion Aligns with PA Economic Development Plan 

Lindsey Hover, Manager of Business Attraction and Expansion, the Chamber, said Alstom’s Philadelphia project office announcement follows the manufacturing industry growth trend she’s been seeing and aligns with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of Community & Economic Development’s (PA DCED) focus on manufacturing industry growth one of the five industry pillars in the state’s 10-year state Economic Development Strategy.

“It’s great to see these manufacturing expansions, growing one of the five sectors outlined in Governor Shapiro’s 10-year economic development strategy. And, it’s really great to see a transportation company taking a foothold in a major city where it already has made economic investments in the state,” Hover said.
