PHILADELPHIA – Today, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce (GPCC) and Select Greater Philadelphia (Select) launched a new business attraction television Public Service Announcement (PSA) to air in East Coast media markets. Thanks to the generous donation from Comcast Corporation, the PSA will run through August 2014 and air across 50 Comcast channels.

The ad aligns with the new PHL: Here for the Making campaign, launched on February 12, 2014.  GPCC and Select are part of a strategic partnership created by the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB), which aims to position Greater Philadelphia as a world-class destination.

The cooperative marketing campaign highlights compelling stories about the people and businesses making great things in the city and region. Marketing components include the new television commercial, advertising for all mediums, an extensive social media program, and global press outreach.

Old City Philadelphia-based marketing agency Mighty Engine developed the campaign with the PHLCVB, with inspiration from the local and national makers’ movement.  The new campaign aims to strengthen Greater Philadelphia’s position as a world-class destination for business gatherings, expansion and global tourism.

Site Selector Magazine Ranks Greater Philadelphia as Top East Coast Metro

For the second straight year, Greater Philadelphia has been ranked one of the top ten metros in the country for new and expanded corporate facilities for 2013 and number one in the Northeast ahead of New York City, by Site Selection Magazine.  According to Select Greater Philadelphia, the Greater Philadelphia region encompasses eleven counties in southeastern Pennsylvania, northern Delaware and southern New Jersey.

Select Greater Philadelphia Assists Commuter-Services Company in Relocating Headquarters to Philadelphia

Following an extensive site selection process, vRide, a provider of commuter transportation services, announced on February 12 that it has relocated its corporate headquarters to Philadelphia.

vRide has entered into a lease for a 4,300-square-foot loft-style site in Old City, Philadelphia. The company will invest more than $1.6 million to support the expansion through renovations, site improvements and new equipment. vRide also committed to creating 75 new jobs within three years.

Helped by Select Greater Philadelphia (Select) in their real estate site search, vRide was also assisted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Governor’s Action Team and the Department of Community and Economic Development, and the City of Philadelphia.

“The daily commute is about to get cheaper, cleaner and less stressful. vRide’s innovative technology application will take cars off the road and make commuting more productive. It is a great fit for Greater Philadelphia’s growing technology economy,” said Thomas G. Morr, CEO of the regional economic development organization, Select Greater Philadelphia. “Select was delighted to collaborate with business leaders and officials from Pennsylvania and Philadelphia to help attract the company headquarters here” Morr said.

The company received a funding proposal from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development which offered a $250,000 Pennsylvania First Program grant, $150,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits, and a $29,100 Guaranteed Free Training grant to be used for skills training for both new and incumbent employees. The company has accepted the funding proposal, but must still apply for each loan and grant and agree to the terms prior to award receipt.

“When evaluating the ideal location for our new headquarters, we looked for a city with great talent, infrastructure and a positive approach to sustainability, “vRide CEO Ann Fandozzi said.  ”It was clear that Philadelphia was the perfect choice for us as we continue to develop consumer and business technologies that enable commuters to find the best ride to work. Comcast Corp. Announces Major Expansion in Philadelphia

Comcast Corporation and Liberty Property Trust recently announced they will jointly develop the “Comcast Innovation and Technology Center” on the 1800 block of Arch Street in Center City Philadelphia.  The proposed $1.2 billion 59-story, 1,121-foot tower will neighbor Comcast Center, Comcast Corporation’s global headquarters, and become a dedicated home for the company’s growing workforce of technologists, engineers, and software architects.  The facility will also create a media center in the heart of the City by becoming home to the operations of local broadcast television stations NBC 10/WCAU and Telemundo 62/WWSI, and will offer incubator space for local technology startups. The incubator space will be located in the new building to centralize many of Comcast’s technology-based job functions and will include space for some of Philadelphia’s tech startups.

American Airlines Group Inc., Forms World’s Largest Carrier, Maintains Hub at PHL

This month, American Airlines and US Airways combined to form the world’s largest airline.  AMR Corporation and US Airways Group, Inc. announced the completion of their merger to officially form American Airlines Group Inc., and begin building the new American Airlines.

The new American has a robust global network with nearly 6,700 daily flights to more than 330 destinations in more than 50 countries and more than 100,000 employees worldwide.

“Our people, our customers and the communities we serve around the world have been anticipating the arrival of the new American,” said Doug Parker, CEO of American Airlines.  “We are taking the best of both US Airways and American Airlines to create a formidable competitor, better positioned to deliver for all of our stakeholders.  We look forward to integrating our companies quickly and efficiently so the significant benefits of the merger can be realized.”

The process is expected to take approximately 18 to 24 months. Until the integration process is complete, the airlines’ separate websites, and, as well as the two airlines’ reservations systems and loyalty programs, will continue to operate separately.

GuardianMPS Announces Growth Plans in Greater Philadelphia

This month, GuardianMPS announced that it will continue to grow and establish its U.S. headquarters in Philadelphia.  Since launching last spring, the company will now open a Philadelphia office in early 2014 with roughly 10 employees, growing to 30 employees over the next three years.  GuardianMPS is a subsidiary of the United Kingdom (UK) company Guardian24, a leading supplier of solutions to the UK mobile market. GuardianMPS recently completed a working trial of its Mobile Personal Safety product with the Philadelphia Department of Human Services (DHS) and has signed a contract to expand this service to more employees.

Select Greater Philadelphia played a large role in bringing GuardianMPS to Philadelphia, providing an overview of the region and comparison with other competitor states.  It introduced the company to the City of Philadelphia Commerce Department and the Department of Human Services, who were able to facilitate the initial trial. This was instrumental in the company’s decision to locate its U.S. headquarters in Philadelphia.

Axalta Coating Systems’ Establishes New Global and North American Headquarters in Pennsylvania Bringing 332 New Jobs

This month, Axalta Coating Systems, LLC  announced that it will establish its global headquarters to a 30,000-square-foot facility in Center City Philadelphia and its North American headquarters to a 55,000-square-foot facility in Concord Township, Delaware County.  The combined project is expected to generate a capital investment in excess of $11.4 million, while initially creating 332 new jobs in the Commonwealth.

Axalta was assisted by a group of economic development professionals, including Select Greater Philadelphia (Select), the Pennsylvania Governor’s Action Team, the City of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation, and the Delaware County Commerce Center.

Philadelphia Mayor Leading Trade Mission to UK and Israel This Fall

Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter will lead a group of business leaders on a trade mission to the United Kingdom and Israel this fall.

The trip will kick off in the United Kingdom on November 2 with visits to industry leaders in the sustainable energy, information technology, life science and financial services sectors. In London, the group will participate in the World Travel Market Conference which attracts ministers of tourism throughout the world.  The trade mission will then proceed to Israel from November 7 thru the 11th. While in Israel, the Mayor will participate in the Jewish Federation of North America meeting in Jerusalem and visit companies in the growing IT sector in Tel Aviv.

The Mayor’s office is partnering with numerous organizations, including Select Greater Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, overseas trade offices, international consulates and chambers of commerce, and the PHLCVB.
