Greater Philadelphia is a leader in cell and gene therapy innovations that are revolutionizing healthcare, and saving and improving lives.
Since the 1990s, early gene therapy research was underway at the University of Pennsylvania. Today, four FDA-approved therapies are on the market thanks to innovations in our region. They include the first FDA-approved cell therapy, first FDA-approved gene therapy and first FDA-approved aesthetic cell therapy.
More than 30 R&D companies in this space have been founded here, thanks to academic and human resources available in institutions like the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia , Coriell Institute, Christiana Care Gene Editing Institute, Jefferson Health, Temple University and the Wistar Institute – all of which have the infrastructure and expertise to support the translation of new medicines.
